Located in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix is the 5th most populous city in the United States. Residents of the city are known as Phoenicians. When the entire metro Phoenix area is included, it is home to almost 5 million residents. Phoenix, also known as the Valley of the Sun, is the hottest climate of any major city in the United States, with the average high temperature over 100 degrees, for approximately 110 days per year, and only averages 5 days per year where the temps are below freezing. Phoenix averages 85% sunshine and scant rainfall, at just over 8" per year.

Other than the mountains in and around the city, Phoenix is generally flat, which allows the city's main streets to run on a precise grid with wide open-spaced roadways. The Salt River runs westward through Phoenix and the area is surrounded by the McDowell Mountains to the NE, the White Tank Mountains to the West, the Superstition Mountains to the East and the Sierra Estrella Mountains to the SW. Within the city are the Phoenix, Camelback & South Mountains, as well as numerous smaller mountains.

The early economy of Phoenix was mainly agriculatural. Population has grown and the economy has diversified, so many residents are employed by the government, educational systems, high-tech and telecommunications companies. Because of the warm climate in winter, Phoenix greatly benefits from seasonal tourism, recreation and the golf industry.
